“A BRITISH AFTERNOON” – nel salotto di Georg Friedrich Haendel

La Londra del Settecento fu un luminoso centro culturale. Figura emblematica fu senza dubbio il tedesco Georg Friedrich Haendel, naturalizzato inglese, compositore e organizzatore delle attività musicali presso la corte dei reali d’Inghilterra lungo il corso della sua intera vita. Illustri musicisti lavorarono nell’orchestra di Haendel, uno tra tutti John Ernst Galliard, originario di Celle in Germania ma ben presto stabilitosi nella capitale del Regno Unito, lavorando come oboista e fagottista nel Queen Anne’s Consort. Nel 1711 sembra aver sostituito Jean Baptiste Loeillet come oboista nel Queen’s Theater, dove Handel scrisse appositamente per lui. Nel concerto di apertura della stagione 2023 di CaronAntica, l’ensemble Il Ricercar Continuo ci conduce in un viaggio nei prestigiosi salotti inglesi del settecento, riscoprendo la brillantezza della chamber music che sfrutta le caratteristiche degli strumenti trasformandoli in personaggi quasi operistici. Protagonista assoluto il fagotto barocco, ma anche una speciale arpa tripla, riprodotta proprio a partire dalle cronache che descrivono lo strumento utilizzato da William Powell, arpista nell’orchestra di Haendel, il Violoncello barocco e la Tiorba. Eighteenth-century London was a luminous cultural centre. An emblematic figure was undoubtedly the German Georg Friedrich Haendel, then naturalized Englishman, composer and organizer of musical activities at the English royal court throughout his entire life. Distinguished musicians worked in Haendel’s orchestra, one of all John Ernst Galliard, originally from Celle in Germany but soon settled in the capital of the United Kingdom, working as an oboist and bassoonist in Queen Anne’s Consort. In 1711 he seems to have replaced Jean Baptiste Loeillet as oboist in the Queen’s Theatre, where Handel wrote especially for him. In the opening concert of CaronAntica’s season 2023, the ensemble Il Ricercar Continuo takes us on a journey through the prestigious English salons of the eighteenth century, rediscovering the brilliance of chamber music that explores the characteristics of the instruments, transforming them into almost operatic characters. The absolute protagonist is the baroque bassoon, but also a special triple harp, reproduced starting from the chronicles that describe the instrument used by William Powell, harpist in Handel’s orchestra, the baroque cello and the theorbo.
